Jobst was one of the most prolific inventors in Canadian history, having been awarded 825 patents worldwide. He is credited for patenting the first commercially viable hot runner system in 1965. With his wife Waltraud, he built Mold-Masters Limited from a start-up to a leading worldwide supplier of hot runner systems. Although a debilitating stroke forced him to retire as CEO of the company in 1999, Jobst continued to be an inspiration to many with his regular visits to his beloved R&D facility.

Jobst’s involvement with injection molding and moldmaking began in his native Germany. He received accreditation as a Master Mold-Maker there in 1956 and emigrated to Canada two years later. He and Waltraud founded Mold-Masters in 1963. Although hot runners had begun to appear in the early 1960’s, they were far from realizing the benefits that they now provide. They could not be used with a number of resins without burning, splaying, stringing, or other defects. In 1965, Jobst filed for a patent on technology that addressed this problem by providing for cast-in beryllium-copper heating elements positioned outside the melt channel.

Jobst also has invented technologies for melt distribution manifolds, hot runner nozzles, actuation methods, and mold designs that solved many of the issues that plagued the first hot runner systems. This led to hot runner molding being adopted globally, a trend that he supported with further research and development and refinement of the technology he had pioneered.

Jobst and Waltraud also gave generously to the local Georgetown, Ontario community. The Gellert family made a number of significant donations to the local hockey rink expansion initiative in 2002 and the facility was renamed the Mold-Masters Sportsplex. The Gellert family name also graces the local community centre – The Gellert Community Centre. Made possible by a generous family donation, the facility opened in 2004 and features a swimming pool, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, splash pad, soccer fields, multi-use hall, meeting rooms, and kitchen facilities.
